MuM’Orsay

On October 6, the Art Explora Foundation and the Musée d’Orsay will inaugurate the MuM’Orsay, the Foundation’s fourth traveling cultural truck, developed in partnership with the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, which is a partner for the entire tour.
‍
Following the MuMo x Centre Pompidou, the MuMo Collections, and the CinéMo, the MuM’Orsay joins the fleet of mobile museums founded by Ingrid Brochard. At each stop, it offers a free exhibition, guided tours, and hands-on art workshops, bringing the arts directly to local residents.

For its inaugural tour, the MuM’Orsay will first travel through the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region from October 13, 2026, to January 2, 2027, in collaboration with local governments, cultural institutions, and community organizations. The tour will continue in 2027: the MuM’Orsay will travel through Nouvelle-Aquitaine from January 12 to April 10, then through Brittany from April 20 to July 17, 2027.

"Le Grand Bal" Exhibition in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

October 13, 2026, through January 2, 2027

The MuM’Orsay is celebrating the Musée d’Orsay’s 40th anniversary with “Le Grand Bal,” an exhibition dedicated to 19th-century celebrations, dances, and balls.

In the countryside, festive traditions continue to be passed down with the changing seasons. In cities, transformed by changes in work, transportation, and lifestyles, new forms of recreation and social interaction are emerging. Balls and carnivals, village festivals, religious celebrations, evenings at the opera, and official receptions set the pace of social life.

Beyond these festivities, the exhibition explores what the celebrations reveal about an era in the midst of profound change. It highlights social distinctions—from the opulence of salons to popular open-air dance halls—as well as the political, urban, and technological developments that were transforming society. Electric lighting, the early days of photography, and the rise of cinema were revolutionizing the ways in which movement, crowds, and the energy of dance were depicted. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, and films thus come together to create an immersive journey centered on a universal impulse: that of coming together, dancing, and celebrating.

Featuring works by Jean BÉRAUD, Giovanni BOLDINI, François-Rupert CARABIN, Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX, Alexandre CHARPENTIER, Eugène CARRIÈRE, Camille COROT, Charles COTTET, Henri DABADIE, Georges GAREN, Paul GÉNIAUX, Henri GERVEX, Henry LEMOINE, Adolphe MEYER, Alphonse OSBERT, and Charles PILLET from the Musée d’Orsay collection.

An exhibition conceived by Édouard Papet, Chief Curator of Sculpture at the Musée d’Orsay, in collaboration with Estelle Bégué, Outreach Project Coordinator at the Musée d’Orsay.

Presentation of the museum-truck

The MuM’Orsay, designed by Hérault Arnod Architectures in 2026 © Philippe Piron
The MuM’Orsay is the result of a major partnership between the Art Explora Foundation and the Musée d’Orsay, which is dedicated to 19th-century art. For the first time, a selection of the museum’s exceptional collections is hitting the road across France in a museum truck.
Designed by the firm Hérault Arnod Architectures as a mobile exhibition space, similar to the MuMo x Centre Pompidou, the MuM’Orsay showcases original works from the Musée d’Orsay’s collections. At each stop, it offers an exhibition, guided tours, and hands-on art workshops right in the community.

Its design pays homage to the Musée d’Orsay right down to its architecture: on the outside, its iconic clock is transparently silhouetted on the sides of the vehicle; on the inside, hardwood floors, Pompeian red walls, and picture rails recreate the atmosphere of 19th-century museums. A 40-square-meter exhibition space and a loggia host the artworks, workshops, and educational programs.
